Many of us have grown up being told to be grateful for the roofs over our heads and the food on our tables. Though this is all well and true generically speaking, when looking at things from a construction standpoint, it isn’t just about having a roof over your head. It’s about having the right kind of roof!

Roofing Complications

Poor roof work and choice of roofing material can give way to a series of complications. Some of these include but are not restricted to leakages, roof shrinking, cracks, water collection and blow offs. Of course workmanship is highly crucial here and a lot of how a roof is done is relies on how skilled and qualified those doing the work are! That being said, the other critical factor is your choice of roofing material.

Why Choice of Material Matters?

The reason your choice of material matters is that different materials are better suited to different climatic conditions due to their individual properties. Properties include thermal conductivity or insulation, expansion rates and susceptibility to weathering. Further , certain structural designs dictate the use of certain materials with regard to shape, texture and strength.

Over the course of this blog, we’re going to briefly go over seven materials used in roofing and share a little info on what they are good for.

Asphalt Roofing

This is good for use on side spaces such as your workshop but not recommended for use over your main home. Asphalt offers between six to nine years of solid service after which it is anyone’s guess.

Wood Shingle Roofing

Though this does look gorgeous and has a lifespan of anywhere between 20 and 30 years depending on how you keep it, such roofing is prone to weathering and decay. It should also be noted that wood is an insulator and might make a warm space warmer!

Composite Shingle Roofing

Composite shingle roofing though reliable offers a useable lifespan of between fifteen and fifty years. How long it lasts depends on both weather conditions and the quality of the composite material used. Such roofing however is popular and suitable for home use.

Standing-seam Metal Roofing

This type of roofing is also growing in popularity and is known to last anywhere between thirty and fifty years. Again, metal roofing though very durable requires the right kind of installation. Installation involves adequate insulation from both sound and temperature. This roof type is better suited to commercial use.

Wood-shake Shingle Roofing

This type of roofing is known to be effective in keeping out UV rays and is suited to hot sunny weather. With a lifespan of anywhere between thirty five and forty years, this roofing option is one of the sorts we would recommend!

Clay/Spanish Tile Roofing

A southern California favorite and rightly so! This type of roofing is not just durable with a life span of up to one hundred years, but is also ideally suited to the warm and sunny southern California weather!

Slate Roofing

If your construction team and engineers know how to make a solid roof holding, then no option compares to slate. Slate roofing is the sturdiest of all forms but is also rather heavy. For this reason your home infrastructure has to be designed bearing in mind the weight. Once it’s on though, we’re talking a lifespan of over one hundred years!

Upshot

These are among seven brilliant options you could go for when it comes to roofing depending on what the roof you’re building is for! That being said, any well qualified construction specialist will be able to provide more details and other options!
